Star College Scheme


Thiagarajar College is one of the 25 colleges selected by the Department of Biotechnology in New Delhi through a national level competitive selection process for implementation of the project under the Star College Scheme for strengthening of life science and biotechnology education and training at undergraduate level during 2009-2011.

Dr.M.Eyini, Associate Professor of Botany is the Coordinator of the ongoing programme. The DBT, New Delhi, has set forth distinct measures of progress as deliverables from the recipient colleges as listed below:
  • Increase in proportion of ‘Hands on’ experimental work by students
  • Student Seminars and Projects
  • Guest Faculty invited from reputed institutions
  • Industry / Institution / Field visit by students
  • Organising training for faculty
  • Strengthening biotechnology component in existing life sciences courses and practical training
  • Improvement in access to life sciences related journals
  • Increased access of undergraduate students to laboratory Infrastructure

Coordination between the faculty members of the four implementing departments helped the college to score in all the eight counts of progress reviewed at a DBT meeting in New Delhi on 21st January. 2011. Successful implementation of the project under Star College Scheme will take the college to the next level of competition, in which the selected colleges will be conferred the “Star College” status.
