The UGC sponsored two-day National Seminar on Women Empowerment was conducted by the Women’s Studies Centre of Thiagarajar College, Madurai on 14th and 15th March, 2013. Dr. Thamaraichelvan, the Principal welcomed the august gathering and Dr. Eyini, Director, Women’s Studies Centre gave an overview of the seminar. Dr. Uma Kannan, Secretary, Thiagarajar College and Chairperson of the Centre delivered the presidential address. Dr. Kalyani Mathivanan, Vice – Chancellor, Madurai – Kamaraj University inaugurated the National Seminar. Dr. Kamala Selvaraj, the renowned Gynecologist of Chennai, Prof. Susheela Kausik of National Consultative Committee, New Delhi, Srilakshmi Prasad IPS, Member, Tamilnadu Commission for Women, Mrs. Kokilavane Thiyagharajhan, Central Government Counsel, High Court, Chennai, Dr. Rekha Pande, Head, Centre for Women’s Studies Center, University of Hyderabad, Dr. Velumani, Director, Women’s Studies Centre, Gandhigram Rural University and Dr. Manimekalai Director, Department of Women’s Studies, Bharathithasan University, Trichy delivered special lectures on various issues and strategies of Women Empowerment. Mrs. Hema, proposed the vote of thanks.

On the Second day, Prof. Saraswathi, Director, Women’s Studies Centre, Madurai Kamaraj University, Dr. Hemalatha, Coordinator, Centre for Women Empowerment, Anna University, Chennai, Dr. Jeyarathnam, Director, Women’s Studies Centre, Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore and Dr. Suganda Ramamoorthy, Member CDCWS, UGC, New Delhi and Dr. Regina Papa, Senior Consultant, Directorate of Rural Development and Panchayatraj, Chennai, spoke on various issues on Women empowerment. An Awareness Programme on Holistic Healthcare for Women, for Girl Stuents and Women Faculty Members of the College on 30th August 2012.
The Director of the Centre, Dr.M.Eyini welcomed the gathering. Dr.Uma Kannan, the Chairperson of the Centre and Secretary of the College, delivered the presidential address. In which she extolled the need for creating awareness on holistic healthcare among women students and staff members. Dr.A.Thamaraichelvan, the Principal, felicitated the programme. Dr.Sudha Dheep, Gynaecologist, Taj Clinic, K.K. Nagar, Madurai gave a guest lecture on “Personal Hygiene”. The session was followed by the fitness counseling by Mrs.K.Shanthi Bala and Mr.A.Arul Ganesh, Nutritionist, Wellness Industry Clinic, Anna Nagar, Madurai. In this session the participants’ health and fitness were checked by measurement of height, weight, BMI, BMR and cholesterol level. Based on the assessments they were counselled on their diet and exercise requirement.
Mrs.Suganya, Senior Dietitian, Apollo Speciality Hospital, Madurai gave a gust lecture on “Diet and Nutrition”. She emphasized the significance of a balanced diet to maintain a healthy body and mind. Mr. K.P. Gangadharan, Assistant Professor, Institute of Gandhian Studies and Research, Gandhi Museum, Madurai talked on “Yoga and Meditation”. He demonstrated the basic and essential yoga steps essential for women to sustain holistic health.

The differently-abled students interacted with the resource persons raising several questions concerning different issues of the differently – abled like the rules governing the usage of bus, the boundaries of the transport divisions covering Madurai and nearby places and the eligibility criteria for attending IAS coaching. They expressed the opinion regarding the disabled-friendly status of various public places. They claimed that the lack of the provision of wheelchairs or ramps in several public places make the differently-abled more immobile. The college proposes to start a rehabilitation cell from the next academic year with the support and approval of UGC, New Delhi.

Women’s Studies Centre of Thiagarajar College, Madurai is introducing two certificate courses for the girl students of the college from this academic year. Dr. Uma Kannan, Secretary, Thiagarajar College who is also the Chairman of the Women’s Studies Centre delivered the Presidential Address. She talked on the importance of learning skills required for self-employment and the need for acquiring skills for becoming an entrepreneur. Mrs. Visalakshi Kannan Founder and CEO, Raman Technologies Inc. Washington D.C., USA held an interactive session with the students involving psychometric test and motivational test for becoming an entrepreneur. Dr. Aruna Devaraj, Associate Professor (Rtd.) and Herbal Scientist, Jayaraj Annapackiam College for Women, Theni gave a guest lecture on “Herbal Health Care”. She introduced the different herbs used in skin, hair and health care by using real specimen and through power point presentation.
