The Women’s Studies Centre of Thiagarajar College, Madurai – 09, organized an Awareness Lecture on “Women and Advocacy” on 23rd February 2026 at 3.00 p.m. in the Diamond Jubilee Hall. The programme aimed to create awareness among students about the importance of advocacy in promoting women’s rights, legal literacy, gender justice, and social empowerment. The programme was organized in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal – 5 (Gender Equality).
The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. R. Aruna, Director, Women’s Studies Centre, who welcomed the dignitaries, resource person, faculty members, and students. She highlighted the importance of advocacy in empowering women and emphasized the role of educational institutions in nurturing socially responsible women leaders.
The resource person, Mrs. Elizabeth Srinivasan, Juris Doctor licensed in Pennsylvania and Georgia, and Former Legal Director, Domestic Violence Centre, USA, spoke about the legal system in the United States and key laws protecting women’s rights. She discussed the status of women in the U.S., the challenges faced by Indian women living there, and issues related to domestic abuse in India. She also shared insights on work–life balance and encouraged students to remain informed and confident in advocating for women’s rights. The session was interactive, with students raising questions regarding legal protection and balancing professional and personal life.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. M. Alamelumangai, Assistant Coordinator, Women’s Studies Centre, who expressed gratitude to the resource person, Principal, Director, faculty members, and students for their support and participation in making the programme successful.
