The Women’s Studies Centre of Thiagarajar College, Madurai, in collaboration with Pasumai Nanbargal, organized the Viksit Bharat – Nagar Van Project titled “Roots of Freedom, Branches of Tomorrow” on 15 August 2026 at 8.30 a.m. at Thiagarajar College, Madurai, as part of the celebrations marking the 80th Independence Day of India. The programme was aligned with SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 15 – Life on Land.
As part of the initiative, 1,000 saplings, including fruit-bearing varieties such as Amla, Guava, Jackfruit, Lemon and Pomegranate, and ornamental plants such as Hibiscus, Rose, Jasmine, Tabernaemontana and Table Rose, were distributed to faculty members, students and members of the public. The programme aimed to promote environmental consciousness, increase green cover and encourage community participation in environmental conservation. The theme “Roots of Freedom, Branches of Tomorrow” highlighted the responsibility of building a greener, healthier and sustainable future through collective environmental action.
